Solar America Initiative

Together with Northeast Denver Housing Center, Groundwork Denver was awarded a Solar America Initiative grant from the Department of Energy. The grant is providing us with technical assistance to address some of the challenges of and take advantage of the opportunities of installing photovoltaic panels on low-income rental housing developed using the low-income housing tax credit program. We are working with a team from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to identify the best properties within NDHC’s Whittier Affordable Housing Project to install 75 kW of photovoltaics. In the meantime, NREL experts are also helping us determine the best way to capture utility company rebates and federal tax credits for the project.

A unique part of the project is that NREL is providing support to train Groundwork Denver and NDHC staff, as well as community members on photovoltaic design and installation. This opportunity will allow 3 to 5 community members to participate in the installation of the PV systems, providing economic opportunities and building community capacity in the growing “new energy economy”.
