Porch Bulb Project

Frustrated with a lack of real action to address climate change, Kevin Suchlicki and Sue Okerson, decided to start doing something simple but with potentially big impact. They went door-to-door offering to swap out incandescent front porch light bulbs for compact fluorescent bulbs. This seemingly simple gesture was a success! People happily accepted the free bulbs, installed for them, and greenhouse gas emissions started dropping.

In April 2008, Kevin and Sue asked Groundwork Denver to help them increase the impact of the Porch Bulb Project. This partnership has taken off, with 790 bulbs swapped by teams of volunteers in the Sunnyside, Clayton, Chaffee Park, and Highland neighborhoods.

2008 RESULTS:
790 Bulbs Swapped = 47 tons of CO2 per year avoided!

In addition to the measurable savings resulting from the porch bulb swap, the Porch Bulb Project provides us with a unique strategy to reach Denver’s low-income and elderly residents with assistance to reduce their energy bills. The straightforward action of swapping a porch bulb opens the door to a more in-depth conversation about energy savings in the home. The neighbor-to-neighbor, door-to-door approach allows us to engage the most needy residents, such as the very low-income and elderly, who are often hard to reach through standard communication methods, like fliers or advertisements.
